England were 4-0 up at half-time. France fought back to 4-3. By the end, Bukayo Saka had a hat-trick, England had won 6-4, and Kylian Mbappé had scored twice in a match he would probably have preferred to avoid altogether.

The third-place play-off gave Mbappé his ninth and tenth goals of the tournament. It also left Lionel Messi needing two in the following day’s final just to draw level.

Messi finished on eight. Mbappé won the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot with 10 goals, retaining the award he had claimed in Qatar four years earlier. France finished fourth. FIFA’s Golden Boot report

That is an awkward combination to celebrate. Scoring more than anyone else at a World Cup ought to feel like enough, yet Mbappé’s tournament ended with England collecting bronze medals and Spain preparing to play for the trophy.

How the Golden Boot race came down to the final weekend

Messi and Mbappé had both reached eight goals before the tournament’s last two matches. Each had one game left, although the circumstances were rather different.

Mbappé faced England in Miami. Messi had a World Cup final against Spain.

The France forward took his chance in a game that veered well beyond the usual consolation-match script. England’s four-goal half-time lead nearly disappeared before Saka completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot and Jude Bellingham added a solo goal. Mbappé’s double survived as one of the few consolations France could take from the afternoon. FIFA’s report from Miami

Messi still had the opportunity to answer. But the final stayed goalless through 90 minutes, and Ferran Torres scored in the 106th to give Spain a 1-0 win. Argentina lost their title; Messi remained two goals short of Mbappé. FIFA’s final report

Where Mbappé scored his 10 goals

There was no single afternoon that accounted for most of his total. He scored twice against Senegal, twice against Iraq and another two against Sweden, then kept adding goals as France progressed.

The knockout goals included a penalty against Paraguay and the opener against Morocco. Spain stopped him in the semi-final, leaving the England match as his last opportunity to add to his tally. FIFA’s account of Mbappé’s scoring campaign

For anyone following the World Cup 2026 Golden Boot race through daily updates, that distinction matters: the eight-goal figures circulating before the final weekend were a snapshot, not the final standings.

What happens if players finish level?

Had Messi scored twice against Spain, goals alone would not have settled the award.

FIFA first uses assists to separate players with the same goal total. If they also have the same number of assists, the player who played fewer minutes ranks higher.

Mbappé’s two-goal margin made that calculation unnecessary in 2026. FIFA’s Golden Boot criteria

Ten goals, and a record beyond this tournament

Mbappé’s double against England also took his career World Cup total to 22, making him the competition’s all-time leading scorer.

His 10 goals in 2026 matched Gerd Müller’s return for West Germany in 1970. Only Sándor Kocsis, who scored 11 in 1954, and Just Fontaine, with 13 in 1958, have scored more in a single men’s World Cup. FIFA’s historical comparison

There is a qualification worth keeping alongside those numbers: Mbappé played eight matches. Comparisons across World Cups need to account for the opportunities each tournament’s format provided.

Still, the total explains why his fourth-place finish feels so peculiar. He scored 10 times and broke the career record, then watched two other countries contest the final. The Golden Boot was his, but the match he wanted to play in belonged to Messi and Spain.
